Mistake of The Year

The Poynter Institute released its “Regret The Error” award for 2012 on Wednesday. This year, the dubious honor is shared by Fox News Channel and CNN for incorrectly broadcasting that the Supreme Court had declared the individual mandate within the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 unconstitutional when, in fact, they upheld the mandate as a tax.

The Media General Payback

Hinting at its new life as a pure-play broadcaster, Media General is giving those who lost income during a 2011 furlough program a cash payment equal to up to five days of pay.
Employees who were furloughed for five days or more receive the full five-day bonus.

OOPS!

WGN Chicago has some explaining to do after reporting live the morning of Friday, Nov. 30, on a plane crash on the South Side of the city, which turned out to be a scene being shot for NBC drama Chicago Fire.  The Chicago Tribune reports on its corporate sibling: "We are just getting word that this is being shot as part of a TV show," anchor Larry Potash told viewers.

All About the Pay

Over the past decade, inflation rose 28%, but the median salary for all local TV news workers rose 21.6%. But stations appear more eager to keep their on-air talent than those who direct them. Only 38% of local TV news directors are under contract, compared with 93.6% of news anchors.

Gio has been a reporter for WFOR. Cheryl Casone signs a new deal with FOX.  She anchors the noon hour on Fox Business Channel and “Cashin’ In” for Fox News Channel. Kim Baldonado renews her agreement as a reporter for KNBC in Los Angeles. Oren Liebermann renews his agreement with KYW in Philadelphia as a reporter. Big Shakeup at "Today"

Alexandra Wallace, a senior vice president at NBC News, expected be taking charge of the embattled morning show in the near future, according to network sources. Wallace and a yet-to-be named producer will replace executive producer Jim Bell.  It was under his watch that the once top-rated “Today” slipped behind arch-rival “Good Morning America” after 16 dominant years as the most watched morning show on television

Still TV for Campaign News

When asked which sources of campaign news had been "most useful," nearly half of Americans named television in one of its various forms. Cable news was first on that list, named as the most useful source by 24%; a little more than a quarter volunteered various forms of the internet, while a third as many named local or national newspapers (8%) or radio (6%).
